General Information
Cultured stone is a lightweight affordable and durable solution to real stone. Made from concrete, more specifically it is a mixture of Portland cement, lightweight natural aggregates and pigments. This simulated stone is made from molded plastic to capture the appearance of real stone down to the finest of details. This is simulated masonry that has the durability of any quality concrete or masonry materials such as brick or block.

This synthetic stone can be put on by professional masons or do it yourself.

Cultured stone needs no support or foundation allowing you to use it anywhere. The average thickness is 1 ½” and the weight per square foot is 8 – 12 pounds. The mortar that is recommended is a Type N or Type S Mortar Mix.

Types of designs for faux stone
There are many different colors and blends to choose from when picking out your cast stone. You can also set yourself apart by changing the different style enhancements and techniques the mason can use.

  • Joint styles - Dry stack or exposed aggregate

  • Mortar joint options - Tight fitting, standard 1/2" recessed, standard 1/2" raked or wide mortar joints.

  • Colored veneer - Along with the standard colors comes blends, you can also make your own custom blend to give your home individuality.

  • Styles - The type of risers can dramatically affect the look of your man made stone veneer. You can choose 1 riser, 2 different risers and even three different risers to achieve your look. This is a good option if you are on a budget, because you can use some larger risers with small risers to help save masonry costs.

Problems with cultured stone:
The main concern with manufactured stone is about the color and the longevity of it. Almost all artificial stone has a solid color. This color is mixed in with the concrete, so the concern arises from the pigmented secondary color. this is the color that is sprayed onto the molds and makes it look like real stone. Make sure your manufacturer uses high quality, non water soluble pigments and you shouldn't have to worry about this problem.

Maintenance of artificial stone:
Cleaning can be done with soapy water and a bristled brush, don not use a wire brush and do not use a high pressure sprayer.
